Vladimir Jurowski, one of our three Principal Artists, conducts three concerts with us this week, two in London and one in Paris. Ahead of these we caught up with him for one of our Speed Interviews:

What/when was your big breakthrough?
1995

What do you fear the most?
To act against my own conscience.

My wife’s

What – or where – is perfection?
Perfection is an ideal. As such it belongs into the reign of dreams.

Who is your favourite hero from fiction (book/comic/film/opera) – and why?
Snufkin (Snusmumriken) from the ‘Moomins’-series by Tove Jansson – for he is an idealist, an individualist, always calm, good-humoured, a music-lover and an eternal traveller.

What’s your favourite ritual?
Decorating the Christmas tree.

Which living person do you most admire (and why)?
Alice Herz-Sommer, the 106 years old holocaust survivor. For her never ceasing optimism and love of life.

What other talent or skill would you like to possess?
Talent for writing poetry.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
One should always follow the path of the Heart and not the path of the Mind.

What is the most played piece of music on your MP3 player or in your CD collection?
Bach’s Christmas Oratorio

What’s the best thing about working with the OAE?
The interest the musicians take in the music they are performing. Whatever they do – they CARE about it.

Should the classical music world work harder to attract a wider audience?
Yes. But without making itself too ‘easy to digest’.
