Sorry, we haven’t put one of these up for a while, but the OAE have been just too darned busy!

This week, we speak to Projects Manager, Megan Russell:

Megan RussellWhat’s your role in the OAE office? Not sure if I can answer this one ‘quickly’! My job covers so many different areas – booking flights, accommodation and sorting touring logistics, fixing players, booking rehearsal venues, managing rehearsals, managing concerts, touring, doing airport check-ins, running the OAE Experience scheme for young players, organising auditions, unjamming the photocopier as I sit right next to it!

What does your typical day involve?

I don’t think there is such a thing as a typical day in the projects team. Normally I’ll get to work first thing and look over my emails, if I’m in the office, I’ll spend the rest of the day working on either last minute preparations for a current project, or forward planning future projects. Sometimes I am out and about at meetings, or managing rehearsals which are all over London and take place at all hours of the day.

Which mobile number do you call the most?

Sadly, I think last time I checked, it was someone in the office! Probably Philippa, our Orchestra Manager as she is out and about so much.

What – or where – is perfection?

I’ve thought about this one for a while and I really don’t know what the answer is. Read the rest of this entry »

This week, we chat to Georgina Cooksley about life as an intern with the OAE…

GeorginaWhat’s your role in the OAE office?

I’m the graduate intern so I get to be involved in all parts of the OAE. Mainly I work with the Projects team organizing and planning concerts but I also liaise with the Communications and Development teams and help the Education team with string club (although I can’t actually play the violin…yet.)

What does your typical day involve?

No two days have been the same here and there’s always a new challenge. One morning I had to dash to the Barbican to deliver Sir Simon Rattle his Tristan and Isolde music and another I’m backstage at the QEH catching Nick Logie with the chocolates or giving out flowers on stage. Most days I’m in the office talking to the players’ on the phone, helping Megan with US visas and E101s, drinking coffee, fixing the photocopier and anything that pops up.

Which mobile number do you call the most?

I text message rather than call people, so the number I probably text the most is my friend Amanda. My mum would be a close second and it’s normally for cooking or cleaning advice.

What – or where – is perfection?

Lying on a beach with your feet buried in the sand, listening to the waves roll along the sand.

What’s your favourite ritual?

Oh dear, this is going to sound bad but I would have to say ‘Friday night wine.’ It’s more about celebrating the end of the week and having a chat and a giggle with your friends over wine. It’s especially good if it’s a New Zealand wine. Read the rest of this entry »

This week, we speak to William Norris in the OAE office…

William NorrisWhat’s your role in the OAE office?

I’m the Communications Director. At a basic level it’s my job to make sure that we maximise ticket sales for our concerts in London. But really it’s about a lot more than this – looking after the ‘brand’ of the orchestra, enhancing the audiences experience, attracting different kinds of audience, and thinking about the orchestras public profile and press coverage.

What does your typical day involve?

There’s no typical day which is one of the reasons I enjoy my job. But an average day might include preparing sales figures, coordinating mailings, working with our designer, booking adverts, trying to avoid sales calls, writing copy, working on our social networking sites, commissioning programme notes, and adding to the large piles of paper which cover my desk.

Which mobile number do you call the most?

I think you’re supposed to say your partners/children’s but since I have neither no one number springs to mind…These question are getting very personal suddenly! I quite often call my own so I can find my phone…

What – or where – is perfection?

I’m not sure there is such a thing. A glass of wine outside on a balmy summers evening comes pretty close though.

Who is your favourite hero from fiction (book/comic/film/opera) – and why?

I’m really not sure I have one. I usually like the underdog. Like the cute but rather hapless aliens in Toy Story. Read the rest of this entry »

This week, we speak to Ceri Jones in the OAE office…

CeriWhat’s your role in the OAE office?

Projects Director

What does your typical day involve?

There is no such thing as a typical day.  Checking e-mails, writing e-mails, drafting schedules, thrashing out details for future schedules with conductors, artists, players, negotiating details for artists contracts, realising my desk is hidden somewhere beneath a huge pile of papers, coffee cups and apple cores then attempting to tidying it up before being side tracked by a telephone call….

Which mobile number do you call the most?

Philippa – our orchestra manager.  It’s the only mobile number I know off by heart other than my own (not even my Mum’s!)

What – or where – is perfection?

It doesn’t exist.  We can always do better.  But in my head perfection is probably a quiet beach somewhere in the Indian Ocean.  I wouldn’t know I’ve never been there.

Who is your favourite hero from fiction (book/comic/film/opera) – and why?

Elizabeth Bennett, apart from being ridiculously stubborn she was a pretty modern thinking girl – way ahead of her time!  Most leading ladies of literature and opera are a bit wet. Read the rest of this entry »

Development Manager, Individual Giving

What does your typical day involve?

Lots of emails and thinking ahead.

Which mobile number do you call the most?

What – or where – is perfection?

Haven’t seen or been there yet but it could be listening to a Beethoven symphony in a darkened room.

This week, we speak to Natasha Stehr in the OAE office…

What’s your role in the OAE office?Tasha

Marketing and Press Officer

What does your typical day involve?

I usually start my day looking through the previous day’s papers, then check my work emails.  The rest of the day comprises of: updating our social networking sites and website, preparing programmes for the new season, compiling articles for our various newsletters/blog, updating our mailing list/database, writing and sending press releases, researching new media and community websites, talking to our student reps and finding new ways to attract a younger audience to our events.  Over the next two months, I’ll be going to all the London uni freshers fayres to promote our student scheme- time consuming but a lot of fun, plus I get to pick up a lot of freebies!

Which mobile number do you call the most?

Either home or my boyfriend’s mobile. Read the rest of this entry »

This week, continuing our quick questions with the OAE office team, we speak to Natalie Chivers…

What’s your role in the OAE office?Natalie

Education Projects Manager

What does your typical day involve?

Hard question for me! I never know. It could be working at my computer booking players and evaluating or jumping around a school hall with children performing something from an opera or talking to a string club parent about their child’s progress. My job is a big mixture of different things so there’s never a typical day.

Which mobile number do you call the most?

Joe’s, my boyfriend. Even though I’ve just moved in with him (gush) I still seem to ring him the most.

What – or where – is perfection?

A bath and freshly cleaned sheets followed by a lie-in. Simple pleasures.

Who is your favourite hero from fiction (book/comic/film/opera) – and why?

I’m really stuck on this question but one of my favourite characters is Jeff ‘The Dude’ from the Big Lebowski. He’s definitely not a hero but he is very funny and horizontally breezes through life. I’d be like that if I could. Read the rest of this entry »
